Biography

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, is a prominent Ugandan opposition leader, musician, and actor. Born in Nkozi Hospital, he grew up in the Kamwokya slum in the capital city of Kampala. Despite his humble beginnings, Kyagulanyi has risen to become a powerful voice against the autocratic Ugandan regime.

Kyagulanyi's career in music began in the early 2000s under the stage name BobiRob before adopting the name Bobi Wine. His early singles such as "Akagoma," "Funtula," and "Sunda" gained popularity in Uganda and established him as a successful artist. Known for his socially conscious music, Kyagulanyi has released over 70 songs across various genres including kidandali, reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeat.

In addition to his music career, Kyagulanyi has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry in Uganda. He has acted in several local films, including "Yogera" and "Situka," and had his own reality TV show called "The Ghetto President."

However, it is Kyagulanyi's political career that has brought him international attention. In 2017, he announced his candidacy for parliament and won the by-election for Kyadondo County East constituency by a wide margin. He gained increasing fame by championing victories for candidates he campaigned for in subsequent by-elections. Kyagulanyi's outspoken criticism of President Yoweri Museveni and his regime led to his arrest on multiple occasions, with allegations of torture and abuse. These incidents sparked widespread protests across Uganda, resulting in casualties and human rights violations.

In 2020, Kyagulanyi announced his candidacy for the 2021 Ugandan presidential election. He joined the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, becoming its president and presidential flag-bearer. However, his campaign was met with arrests and disruptions by the authorities. The election itself was marred by violence and allegations of fraud. Despite the electoral commission announcing Museveni as the winner, Kyagulanyi refused to accept the results, claiming they were fraudulent.

Outside of his music and political career, Kyagulanyi has been involved in various humanitarian initiatives. He has supported projects to improve conditions for the poor, including promoting cleanliness in hospitals, sanitation, and disease prevention. Kyagulanyi has also been a vocal advocate for maternal and child health, partnering with organizations like Save the Children.
