Biography

Joseph Mayanja, professionally known as Jose Chameleone, is a highly acclaimed Ugandan AfroBeat artist and musician. Born on April 30, 1979, in Kampala district, he is recognized for his versatile singing abilities in Luganda, English, and Swahili.

In his early years, Joseph attended several schools including Nakasero Primary School, Mengo Senior Secondary School, Kawempe Muslim Senior Secondary School, Katikamu Seventh Day Adventist Senior Secondary School, and Progressive Senior Secondary School. Notably, he composed the anthem for Kawempe Muslim Secondary School.

Chameleone's musical style is a captivating blend of Ugandan folk, central African rumba, zouk, and reggae. He embarked on his music career as a DJ at the Missouri night club in Kampala in 1996. Two years later, he emerged as a recording artist in Kenya under the Ogopa Deejays record label, releasing his debut single, "Bageya," featuring Kenyan artist Redsan.

Throughout his illustrious career, Jose Chameleone has released numerous successful albums, including "Mama Mia," "Mambo Bado," "Jamila," "Kipepeo," "Bageya," "Shida za Dunia," "Bayuda," and "Njo Karibu." These albums have garnered significant popularity not only in Africa but also among listeners across the continent, with a substantial fan base in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

In addition to his album releases, Chameleone has achieved remarkable milestones as a live performer. Notably, he attracted the largest audience at the Lugogo Cricket Oval Stadium in Kampala, showcasing his immense popularity and stage presence.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Chameleone has extended his influence through various activities. He established the music label Leone Island, where he serves as the CEO, nurturing talented artists such as the late Mosey Radio, Weasel, AK 47 Mayanja, King Saha, Papa Cidy, Pallaso, Melody, Yung Mulo, and Big Eye. He also spearheads the Chameleone Foundation, which aims to enhance skills and talent among disadvantaged youth.

Chameleone's impact extends beyond the realm of music. He has been designated as the Ambassador of the Busoga Tourism Initiative by the former speaker of the parliament of Uganda, Rebecca Kadaga. Moreover, he actively participates in campaigns to combat poverty and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, leveraging his fame and fortune to contribute to these causes.

In his personal life, Chameleone is happily married to Daniella Atim, and the couple has five children, who reside and study in the United States.

Recognized for his exceptional talent and contributions to the music industry, Chameleone has received numerous accolades throughout his career. Among his notable achievements are the Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM Awards), Tanzania Music Awards, Kisima Music Awards, HiPipo Music Awards, African Entertainment Awards, All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), and Galaxy Zzina Music Awards.
