Rachel Mirembe, better known by her stage name Recho Rey, is a Ugandan rapper, fashion model, and entrepreneur. She was born on April 5, 1998, in Kireka, Uganda.
Recho Rey started rapping at the age of 15 and quickly gained a following for her unique sound and powerful lyrics. In 2019, she won the Best Female Rapper Award at the Uganda Hip Hop Awards. She has since released several top chatting singles, and has toured all over Uganda.
Recho attended Pioneer Day and Boarding Primary School, Namboole High School, and Standard College, Nsangi. It was during her time at Standard College that she discovered her love for music. After completing her studies, she faced financial challenges that prevented her from pursuing higher education. However, she remained passionate about music and decided to pursue a career in it. She participated in a talent show named 'Who Is Who,' which marked the beginning of her musical journey.
In March 2022, Recho Rey refuted claims of undergoing a pregnancy termination the previous year. During an interview, she clarified that the rumors originated when her noticeable abdominal change subsided. Recho Rey firmly asserted that she did not have an abortion; rather, she was grappling with profound life challenges that led to a period of depression.
These challenges were exacerbated by various factors, including the dissolution of her former management, who had guided her career, and the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown. The resulting financial instability took a toll on her mental well-being.
Having collaborated for years to advance her career, Recho Rey parted ways with her manager, Arnold Sempijja, also known as Apple Producer, in July 2020. A public letter shared on Recho Rey's social media platforms indicated a misalignment of business interests between her and Apple. The communication legally formalized Apple's departure from Recho's One Ticket Management and Black Girl Fly Entertainment.
