Rehema Namakula, professionally known as Rema Namakula or simply Rema, is a talented Ugandan singer, songwriter, and record producer. Born on April 7, 1990, in Lubaga Hospital, Rema has become a prominent figure in the Ugandan music industry with her soulful voice and captivating performances.
Rema grew up as the youngest in her family, born to her late parents, Hamida Nabbosa and Mukiibi Ssemakula. She began her education at Kitante Primary School and later attended Saint Balikudembe Senior Secondary School for her O-Level and A-Level studies. Although she joined Kyambogo University, she has yet to complete her degree, but she remains determined to do so in the future.
From a young age, Rema's passion for music was evident. During her Senior 6 vacation, she started singing karaoke, which eventually led to her becoming a backup singer for renowned Ugandan musician Halima Namakula, who became her mentor. She further honed her skills by joining Bebe Cool's recording group called Gagamel, where she served as a backup artist. However, in 2013, Bebe Cool discovered that Rema was planning to launch her own solo album without his knowledge, leading to her departure from the group.
In 2013, Rema released her breakthrough single "Oli Wange," written by Nince Henry. The song propelled her to stardom and solidified her position in the Ugandan music industry. With her distinct voice and ability to connect with audiences, Rema garnered a dedicated fan base and gained recognition as a talented artist.
Her talent and popularity led to Rema being selected to represent Uganda at the fourth season of Coke Studio Africa in 2016, alongside other notable Ugandan artists. This invitation-only event also featured international artists like 2Baba (2Face Idibia) from Nigeria and Trey Songz from the United States, further showcasing Rema's growing international presence.
Outside of her musical pursuits, Rema's personal life has also attracted attention. She entered into a romantic relationship with fellow Ugandan recording artist Eddy Kenzo, and together they welcomed a daughter named Aamaal Musuuza in December 2014. The couple's relationship garnered significant media attention and became a topic of public interest.
However, in November 2019, Rema introduced her new fiancé, Dr. Hamza Ssebunya, in a grand ceremony held at her home in Nabbingo, near Kampala. The event drew thousands of well-wishers, highlighting Rema's status as a popular figure in Ugandan society. In November 2021, Rema and Dr. Hamza Ssebunya celebrated the arrival of their second child, a baby girl named Aaliyah Ssebunya.
Throughout her career, Rema has released numerous successful songs, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Some of her notable tracks include "Katonotono," "Lean On Me," "Muchuuzi," and "Banyabo." Her music has earned her accolades, including multiple wins at the HiPipo Music Awards in categories such as Best Breakthrough Artist, Best Female Artist, and Best R&B Song.
